In 60 days, I will be turning the big 4-0. It’s hard for me to believe, but at the same time I am excited. I’m not sure if excited is even a strong enough word. You could not have told my 20 year old self that turning 40 would be a source of excitement. Back then, 40 just seemed, what’s the word…OLD. No one could have convinced me that I would feel young, energetic, be taking on brand new endeavors, and looking forward to creating brand new experiences and going on new adventures. But here I am, about to turn 40 and feeling blessed and expectant. Here are a few reasons why.

  1. I’m still alive!!! If you’re my age or older, I know you completely relate to this. By this time in life, you have become more than aware of your own mortality. You’ve seen friends and loved ones pass away suddenly or tragically or you’ve heard numerous stories of regret form older folks, and you begin to realize just how fragile life is and just how important each new day is. God still has me here for a purpose, and I want to fulfill it. No time to waste!
  2. I’ve accomplished quite a few things that I set out to do or pictured for my life. I have a college degree, I’m happily married with some pretty awesome kids, own a very nice, well-decorated home (thanks to hubby), I’ve almost finished paying off my car (just 6 months to go), I teach children every day and feel like I am doing a pretty good job with not only teaching but also inspiring, I’ve started my own photography business, and now I have my blog (I’ve always dreamed of being a writer). I’ve gotten closer to Christ over this past year which has completely changed the direction of my life, and I have a host of family and friends that I can spend quality time with or lean on in times of trouble. These accomplishments and so many others make me proud of the woman I have become and all that I’ve gotten done all before the age of 40.
  3. Last, but not least, I have big dreams for my future, and some of them have only come to be because of the wisdom that I’ve acquired over the past 40 years. Twenty years ago… ten years ago…okay, five years ago, I would not have been able to envision the plans that I now have for my life. I was in a different place with different concerns. Just five years ago I was a divorced, single mom who had just started dating my current husband, I was renting a house with my brother and his family, and struggling to make ends meet. But look at my life now. It has been nothing but the grace of God and the wisdom and experience that come with age that have gotten me to this place and has me inspired to do even more. Also, much of what held me back was fear, but not any more. I’m kicking fear to the side and working hard to uncover the woman I have yet to become!

So what’s my plan on how to become 40 and fabulous? Well, I’m glad you asked. First, let me start by saying that I already feel fabulous. As stated in previous posts, although my life has had it’s ups and downs, I can’t say that I have had a bad life and right now I’m pretty content. However, traditionally, turning 40 has had had a stigma to it. People thought that your life was over once you hit this point. If you hadn’t accomplished something big by now, it was too late. Might as well shrivel up, give up, and resign yourself to a life of regret. Luckily, things are changing when it comes to age. More and more women are doing things at 40, 50, 60, 70 and beyond. Lately I have been getting the vibe that age truly isn’t anything more than a number. Ummmm…have you seen Cicely Tyson lately? My point exactly!

Although I feel pretty good about my life right now, I know that there is so much more that I want to do. I truly believe that I am destined for greatness. So I have set some goals for myself to prepare for my 40th birthday which will serve as setting the standard for the next decade of my life, and I am taking you along for the ride.

Every week I will be posting my progress towards my birthday and what I’m doing to prepare for it. Some things I will leave as a surprise to you; some, heck, are still a surprise for me because I haven’t worked out the details. If you follow my Facebook page then you already know that I hinted at trying new adventures as well as creating opportunities to serve others through Random Acts of Kindness as part of the countdown to my birthday. In addition, I have the goal of getting back into shape by losing a few pounds and toning back up. The past few months (that brought a new job for me and new schools and schedules for both of my sons) have really thrown me off, but I am determined to be back in shape by my birthday (jumping back on my Herbalife train). Choo! Choo!

Check back in each week to see what I’m doing. Sharing this with you will help to keep me accountable (with my goals and with my blogging). If you have suggestions about things I can do to try a new adventure or to be of service to someone else, please leave them in the comments section below. Are you ready to start this crazy ride with me? For your birthday, I challenge you to do the same. Don’t just celebrate your birthday, but use it as a time to step out of your comfort zone and truly live your life. I know that’s what I’m going to do!

  1. I remember turning twenty-five and some person (my husband) called me old, he said that I was turning a quarter of century ?. Enjoy, celebrate, and aspire to be whatever you want to be at forty. Go Girl!!,

  2. It’s great that you’re trying to get back in shape. I definitely understand how a new job can throw you off lol. Will you be having a birthday party to celebrate the big 40?

    • I haven’t decided yet. I don’t like to be the center of attention, so I would rather do a girl’s night out or a quick getaway with hubby to celebrate or even a spa day all to myself with a mini-makeover.

  3. Wow, I hope to feel as good as you do when I turn 40. Lol I pray that you see all of your dreams manifest in your life and I can’t wait to see your progress.

  4. I read this a day late, lol. I had fun on my birthday, though! I’ve recently been made aware of my mortality but for reasons unrelated to age, however, it is just a number. I’m sure you’ll have a fun adventure until the day comes.

  5. I felt the same way before I turned 30 and my 30th year of life has been the best yet. Cheers to you being 40 and fabulous! 🙂
